8 bi-communal civil society organizations (CSOs) focused on combating human trafficking are urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the death of Anastasia Melega, at the Princess Night Club.
In a joint statement, the organizations—including the Refugee Rights Association, Caritas Cyprus, Mediterranean Institute of Gender Studies, KAYAD, Prologue Consulting, Human Rights Platform, Cyprus Stop Trafficking, and Cyprus Refugee Council—expressed concerns over the initial ruling of suicide by authorities.
They emphasized that many critical questions remain unanswered and called for a full, transparent investigation to uncover the true circumstances surrounding Anastasia’s death.
The statement highlighted the potential link to human trafficking, saying, “It cannot be ignored that this incident raises serious concerns about human trafficking. We call for further investigation into the woman’s freedom of movement, the conditions in the institutions, and the possible existence of psychological and/or physical violence, pressure, or threats.”
The organizations stressed that the conclusion of suicide should not automatically be considered the definitive outcome of the case, urging authorities to explore all possibilities thoroughly.
