Cypriots worked for 38.5 hours per week in 2023 according to Eurostat


 

Cypriots aged 20 – 64 worked for 38.5 hours per week on average in their main job in 2023, a little over the EU average which stood at 36.1 hours, according to data released by Eurostat.
According to the findings for Cyprus, domestic work (where a household is the employer) was significantly higher compared to the EU average for that sector.
There are notable differences on the member state level, since the longest working weeks were recorded in Greece (39.8 hours), Romania (39.5), Poland (39.3) and Bulgaria (39.0).
By contrast, the Netherlands had the shortest working week (32.2 hours), followed by Austria (33.6) and Germany (34.0).
The economic activities recording the longest working week, in the EU, in 2023, were agriculture, forestry and fishing (41.5 actual working hours), mining and quarrying (39.1) and construction (38.9), whilst the shortest working weeks were recorded in activities of households as employers (26.7 hours), education (31.9) and arts, entertainment and recreation (33.0).
In Cyprus, the longest working weeks were recorded also in agriculture, forestry and fishing (45.7 actual working hours). However, the second longest week is recorded in the activities of households as employers (44.1), followed by mining and quarrying (44.0). The sector of accommodation and food services was also particularly high in Cyprus compared with the EU (42.9 compared to 36.9 in the EU).
The shortest working weeks in Cyprus were found in education (33.8), other service activities (36.1) and the activities of extraterritorial organisations and bodies (37.3).
