Fire at Mersinlik -Tatlısu extinguished

The fire, which broke out in the forest area between Mersinlik (Phlamoudhi) and Tatlısu (Akanthou), has been put out.

Firefighters are continuing extinguishing efforts in the area.

There are no reports of fire elsewhere in Cyprus at the moment.

Police report that the fire broke yesterday out at around 3.30 p.m, in the northern part of the Geçitkale (Lefkoniko) – Tatlısu (Akanthou) highway, and the Mersinlik Picnic area, due to tree branches touching high voltage lines causing sparks to ignite dry grass, covering approximately 10 hectares of forest. Red pine, cypress, carob, olive, maquis vegetation and dry grass were destroyed in the area.
