The increasing traffic accidents on both sides of the island are causing great concern.

Although police have increased inspections, this has not made a difference in the number of drunk driving or speeding offences, especially over the weekends. Meanwhile, the number of fatal accidents is increasing.
According to Diyalog news, 22 people have lost their lives in traffic accidents that took place in North Cyprus since the beginning of January. 318 people were injured in these accidents. The number of fatal accidents experienced, was 8 in Girne (Kyrenia), 5 in Lefkoşa (Nicosia), 4 in Gazimağusa (Famagusta), 4 in İskele (Trikomo), and 1 in Güzelyurt (Morphou).
24 people lost their lives in the 12 months of 2022. The figures halfway through 2023 were almost as high as in 2022, reports say.

South Cyprus records an 18% decrease in road deaths in 2022, according to ETSC

There were 20,678 deaths on EU roads in 2022, a collective increase of 4% compared to 2021, according to the 17th Annual Road Safety Performance Index (PIN Report), released Tuesday, by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC).
According to CNA, out of the 32 countries monitored by the PIN programme, only 13 registered a decrease in road deaths in 2022, compared to 2021.
