Akrounta fire brought under control


 

The fire that broke out in an inaccessible area in the village of Akrounta in the Limassol district has been brought under control.

It is estimated that six and half square kilometres of Limassol state forest was burned. The fire was broke out on Saturday and now it is under complete control following two nights of firefighting efforts.
Director of the Forestry Department Charalambos Alexandrou, speaking on CyBC’s morning programme, said he had personally been notified of the fire at 1.29pm on Saturday and within minutes action was taken.
“The fire is under complete control and forces are now stationed around its entire perimetre, at the ready for prompt response in the event of any more flare-ups,” Alexandrou added.


He expressed the certainty that the fire in Akrounta is due to a human factor.
In his statements to CYBC, he said that there was nothing or specific activity at the point where the fire started, which would justify how the fire was started.
He emphasized that everything shows that the fire broke out by human hands.
