Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar announced that the population in North Cyprus is now 410 thousand.
Tatar who was in London last week responded to questions by MYKibris.com.
“We have brothers who came and settled in the North after 1974. After living in North Cyprus for 20-25 years they had children and grandchildren. We had to give them citizenship, we did, and we continue to do so.” he said.
He added that the official population of “North Cyprus”, which Prime Minister Ünal Üstel refrains from disclosing, was 410 thousand.
Tatar said that the population rate in South Cyprus was 850-900 thousand. Stating that the population in South Cyprus had extensively increased in recent years and that most of the people came from Greece, the Aegean Islands and even the Black Sea. “Are the increased population of South Cyprus only Cypriot nationals? I have doubts.” he said.
“I AM WORKING HARD FOR OUR CITIZENS LIVING ABROAD TO BE ABLE TO VOTE”
Tatar said “When taking into consideration the stage reached in communication, I believe that our citizens living outside of North Cyprus should be given the legal right to vote, without the requirement of a residency permit.”
Referring to diverse opinions on the issue, Tatar said,
“Anyone who does not agree should come out and explain ‘why”. If one individual is a citizen, the other is a citizen too. Moreover, only 65 percent of our citizens vote during an election, the other 35 percent do not, they have no interest. Anyone abroad who has an interest, an opinion, or any thoughts should be able to vote.” Tatar is cited as saying.
