Work is underway to build a tunnel at the Beşparmak (Pentadaktylos) Mountains to make transportation between Orta Mesarya and the northern coast easier and safer.
The Minister of Public Works and Transportation Erhan Arıklı said that the issue was discussed at the Council of Ministers meeting and that the Prime Minister called for work to be done on the matter.
Arıklı stated that they are working on two alternative tunnels, one between Dikmen (Dikomo) and Girne (Kyrenia) and the other between Değirmenlik (Kythrea) and Arapköy (Klepini).
Arıklı said that experts from Türkiye have been invited to the country for a feasibility study to be carried out for the tunnel adding that they are also working with the Highways Department.
The length of the tunnel is expected to be 5 km and its cost around 75-100 million dollars, Arıklı said.
DIRECT FLIGHTS TO 2-3 DESTINATIONS ARE BEING DISCUSSED
Arıklı who referred to the direct flights issue stated that grave studies are being carried out on direct flights to Ercan Airport and that there is a current focus on two or three destinations. They expect to get results on the issue shortly, he said.
