Criminal matters in North Cyprus are increasing, reports say.
According to Havadis newspaper, the Head of Lefkoşa (Nicosia) Police Gökay Karagil noted that 592 minor and 717 serious crimes were committed in 2023. Karagil said that a total of 5,070 people received fines for violating traffic rules.
Karagil also stated that there was an increase in criminal matters in Lefkoşa (Nicosia) such as burglary and illegal residency.
For his part, the Güzelyurt Deputy Chief of Police Cem Kayabaşı said that 126 crimes were filed from 189 minor crimes, and 186 from 219 grave offences were seen in court. 1,410 traffic offences were recorded, Kayabaşı said.
Meanwhile, the head of the North Cyprus Central Prison Fatih Erdoğan said that there are 892 inmates at the central prison, which has a capacity of 725.
A MAJORITY OF CRIMES ARE COMMITTED IN GIRNE (KYRENIA)
According to data from the North Cyprus Central Prison, there are currently a total of 892 prisoners and detainees at the central prison, 828 male and 64 female. According to Bağımsız newspaper, 249 were sentenced for committing crimes in Girne (Kyrenia).
THERE ARE CURRENTLY 394 FOREIGN NATIONALS IN THE CENTRAL PRISON
There are currently 185 North Cyprus citizens, 208 Turkish citizens, 105 TR-North Cyprus dual nationals, and 394 foreign nationals in prison.
Figures prove that drug offences remain high among the criminal offences committed in Girne (Kyrenia). Meanwhile, ‘sexual offences’ and ‘illegal residency’ are also among the most common crimes committed.
472 PEOPLE SENT TO PRISON IN 8 MONTHS
472 people have been sent to prison in 8 months. Reports say that out of the 472 cases heard at the Girne (Kyrenia) Supreme Court and the Girne (Kyrenia) District Court between January 1, 2023, and September 18, 2023, 312 cases are pending and 160 prisoners have been sentenced.
However, this number has now dropped to 249 as most of these people have been released.
