UN envoy encourages Cypriot leaders to listen people

The Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguín, emphasized the importance of Cypriot leaders listening to their communities following her meeting with Turkish Cypriot Leader Ersin Tatar on Wednesday afternoon.

During her meeting with Tatar, Holguín highlighted the international backing for a lasting solution to the Cyprus conflict and shared the aspirations of civil society toward this goal.

After the meeting speaking to press, Holguín described the discussion as “very constructive.”

“He reiterated his position. I told him about my trips to certain countries and that the international community supports a lasting solution in Cyprus, which I consider important and now the responsibility lies with the leaders,” she said.

Holguín also noted her interactions over recent months with various groups, including civil society, the private sector, and youth, reflecting a widespread desire for progress across the island.

So, she said, “it is the responsibility of the leaders to do something, and I hope they can listen the people.”
