North Cyprus is experiencing a tough time in the tourism sector.
Although the number of tourist arrivals and accommodation reservations is back to pre-pandemic figures, the overnight stays are below expectations. The decrease in the number of foreign tourists has also affected tourism professionals.
The decline in the tourism sector has caused both hotels and agencies to reach an economic impasse.
Speaking to Bağımsız News, Cyprus Turkish Tourism and Travel Agencies Association (KITSAB) President Orhan Tolun said, “90 percent of hotels that have no casinos have shut down and 100 of the 160 agencies are on a verge of shutting down.”
Tolun said that the fall in the number of foreign tourists was due to flight ticket prices and lack of promotion. Tolun said that another reason for the decrease in the number of foreign tourists was due to the tour operators losing trust towards North Cyprus.
Tolun emphasized that 90 percent of hotels that do not have casinos have closed down. He stated that the only hotels remaining are in the Lapta (Lapitos) region and around Girne (Kyrenia) that either have casinos or are close to hotels with casinos.
