Fishermen excluded from Green Line Regulation

The fishermen who anchor at the Laguna Sea in Gazimağusa (Famagusta) have been excluded from the Green Line Regulation.

According to an inspection carried out at the Laguna Sea in April, contaminated water is being discharged into the sea. The fishermen who anchor at the Gazimağusa (Famagusta) Port are no longer able to export fish to South Cyprus.

According to Gıynık News, fishermen were excluded from the Green Line Regulation due to contaminated water being poured into the Laguna region. Fishermen have tried all initiatives but couldn’t find a solution to the problem. Residents are also seriously disturbed by the situation.
Chairman of the Fisherman’s Union Kemal Atakan, said that the shelter in Laguna was built in three stages with the support by Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).

Atakan said that the smell was unbearable. “The sewage has mixed with rain water. Following inspections, the European Union has stopped exports of fish sales to South Cyprus as of April. No fish is being caught in the port, but our boats are still anchored here. Gazimağusa (Famagusta) Municipality is turning a blind eye to the issue. The Chamber of Commerce had donated a generator to the municipality’s treatment plant. The generator is nowhere to be seen. There are two buckets that supposedly are being used for the discharge of wastewater but it is not even connected to the system. The idle preschool is now flooded with sewage water” Atakan was cited as saying.
