Greek Cypriot Police at crossings to temporarily keep documents of third-country nationals

Greek Cypriot Police at the divided island’s crossings will be keeping residence documents of third-country nationals who are employed in the Cyprus Republic till their daily visit to North Cyprus.
According to Philenews, this measure is aiming to stop an apparent rising number of third-country nationals leaving the EU-member island for other European countries via Ercan ( Tymbou) airport.
Insiders said that – for years now – a number of Cypriot employers who pay hefty fees for residence and work permits for third-country nationals are taken advantage of.
Specifically, shortly after they start working in the South they cross over to North side of the island.
Then they fly from Ercan airport to EU member states – primarily Portugal and Austria – since they have a valid union document secured by the Cyprus authorities.
