International Relations Specialist Prof. Dr. Hüseyin Işıksal said that a federal-based solution model in Cyprus and both sides joining the European Union (EU) and NATO, would be a disadvantage to the Russian Federation.
Making a statement to Aydınlık Newspaper regarding Russia opening an office in North Cyprus, Işıksal stated that a two-state solution and improving relations with North Cyprus will be for the benefit of the Russian Federation.
“There is a serious opposition against the Russian Federation, especially following the Russia-Ukraine War. Western countries, the European Union, and the United States of America are taking very stern measures against Russia. The Greek Cypriot Administration, which is a member of the EU is also involved in this situation and they are fully fulfilling the wishes of the European Union and the USA.” Speaking of Russia’s global and regional interests, Işıksal said that Cyprus, as a whole joining the EU and NATO would be a complete disaster for Russia, adding that it would be a heavy blow towards their own interests.
Therefore, a solution model desired by the Greek Cypriot side would not be to the advantage of Russia and taking into account the developments experienced following the war with Ukraine, it is clear that the Russian Federation having an interest in North Cyprus is completely for their own benefit.

“The interesting thing is that when the reality has been laid, it is obvious that Russia is not showing any interest in North Cyprus. We are witnessing very closely that the Russian authorities still have very good relations with the Greek Cypriot authorities and are trying to stay on good terms. Therefore, it is necessary to read (understand) the latest developments correctly. This certainly does not mean we will be recognized. It just means that a consular office will open here in North Cyprus.” Işıksal is cited as saying.
