Every year, the second Sunday of May is celebrated as Mother’s Day in North Cyprus as in many countries around the world.
Described as the most important asset in the world, mothers symbolize unrequited love, tolerance, and self-sacrifice.
Mothers will be visited and the love for them will be expressed with gifts on Sunday. Mothers who are not alive today will be remembered by visits to their gravesides.
Mother’s Day has its origins in the United States.
The very first Mother’s Day was held in Virginia, USA in 1908. A woman named Anna Jarvis held a memorial service to honor her deceased mother in 1908 and then launched a campaign to declare the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day.
In 1914, the second Sunday of May was declared as Mother’s Day and a public holiday in the USA, with the decree issued by US President Woodraw Wilson. Later, many countries around the world began to celebrate this date as Mother’s Day.
In Türkiye, the celebration of Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of May began in 1955.
There are other dates set for Mother’s Day, which is celebrated to honor and commemorate mothers, in some countries such as UK.
