North Cyprus earthquake risk being mapped!

A protocol has been signed between the Geology and Mining Department of the Deputy Prime Ministry, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment and the Mineral Research and Exploration Department of Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Ministry for collaboration on earthquake research.

The aim of the research will be to map out the active faults throughout the country and to commence studies to determine the historical period earthquakes and earthquake recurrence intervals. Head of the Geology and Mining Department of the Deputy Prime Ministry, Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Environment Ayşen Albayrak and TRNC project coordinator of the Mineral Research and Exploration Department of Türkiye’s Energy and Natural Resources Ministry Hasan Elmacı signed the protocol.
Within the scope of the protocol, nine trench paleoseismology studies have been carried out to date. Following the completion of the project, fourteen trenches are expected to be dug.

The statement revealed that with the project the earthquake hazard of North Cyprus, which is in a tectonically active region in terms of geological structure, will be revealed. It says that the map will be shaped according to the new data and shared with the public. This will in turn pave the way for the first step towards the creation of earthquake-resistant buildings and cities.
