Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar received the US Ambassador to Cyprus yesterday Julie D. Fisher.
Speaking to journalists following the meeting, Ambassador Fisher expressed satisfaction over the first meeting with TC leader Tatar and said that it was a constructive meeting.
Stating that she conveyed her condolences to Tatar due to the death of the Turkish Cypriots who lost their lives in the earthquake that occurred in Türkiye, Fisher said, “It is truly a misfortune that the young Cypriots lost their lives this way, I believe the Americans felt the pain as deeply as the Cypriots.”
Fisher said that she conveyed to the Turkish Cypriot leader Tatar the continuation of the United States commitment and determination to support the resumption of negotiations process on the island on the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation based on political equality and within the scope of the UN Security Council resolutions.
For his part the Turkish Cypriot leader Tatar called on US Ambassador Julie D. Fisher to support his new policies.
Speaking to the press following the meeting, Tatar said that the newly appointed US Ambassador Julie D. Fisher is newly becoming acquainted with the Cyprus issue and is holding contacts in that direction.
Noting that he spoke to Fisher about the history of Cyprus, the struggles waged, the negotiations and the new policies, Tatar also explained that the acceptance of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriot side was the pre-condition for the continuation of official negotiations process.
