Turkish Cypriot Citrus Exporters Association gears up for strike

Turkish Cypriot Citrus Exporters Association announced that everyone doing business in the citrus industry is on the verge of bankruptcy. The Union announced that it will protest at the Güzelyurt Terminal Roundabout on Tuesday, February 20, at 10 a.m.
A statement by the Union said, “Everyone trying to hold on to this country by producing is on the verge of bankruptcy. The future of citrus production looks dark. Manufacturers, slaughter crews, truckers, plastic crate manufacturers, packaging factories, and exporters are nearly going bankrupt. We are disappearing… We expect your support for the protest so that we can continue producing.”

OUT OF 130.000, ONLY 15.000 TONS OF CITRUS FRUIT WILL BE EXPORTED

Meanwhile, the head of the CTP Güzelyurt District Çağlar Gulamkadir also made a statement on the citrus problems in the sector, criticizing the government for imposing an embargo on its people and making agreements to export only 15 thousand tons of citrus, rather than 130 thousand.

Gulamkadir noted that the agreement on citrus exports was held between the Minister of Agriculture and Cypfruvex management, who went to Türkiye last week, and the officials of the Republic of Türkiye. The agreement on citrus exports is aimed at solving the transportation problem that creates serious costs for exports. Gulamkadir said that both the state budget and the sector have been affected.
