Waste-water is flowing into Gemikonağı Maden Stream!

It has been reported that waste-water coming from the Prime Park dormitory, operated by a private company belonging to the European University of Lefke, is flowing into the Gemikonağı (Karavostasi) Maden Stream (Xeoro Stream) through a pipe that is buried into the stream.

According to Bugün Kıbrıs news, the explosion of the pipe in the stream has caused a major environmental disaster.
The waste-water management under the Environmental Protection Law said that without permission from the Department of Environmental Protection, it is prohibited to build a new septic tank or absorbent well within 500 meters of the stream bed or shoreline.

Speaking to Bugün Kıbrıs, the Environmental Society of Lefke officials gave information regarding the letter that was sent to the Department of Environmental Protection, asking whether any sanctions would be imposed on the relevant dormitory due to the damage caused to the environment and how long this situation will be tolerated.

It was emphasized that 200 tons of waste-water is still flowing into the stream everyday.

During the meeting attended by Lefke District Governorship and all stakeholders, the company asked the municipality to show a place for the treatment facility.

It was stated that showing a new location for the treatment facility, which should have been built along with the construction would cause both time and financial damages, and ruin the nature.
