Claims have been put forward that fruit and vegetables containing banned drugs have been imported into our country due to a deficiency in State Law.
According to Halkın Sesi, the Head of the Chamber of Agricultural Engineers Erkut Uluçam stated that Spirodiclofen, an agricultural pesticide that is prohibited in North Cyprus, is said to be the drug used for apples and pears imported into the country.
Uluçam said that following analysis, although there is a ban on the drug detected in apples and pears it is still allowed to enter the country as the drug is below the limit.
Stating that local producers are having difficulties in finding pesticides for home-grown fruit and vegetables, he said that imported fruit and vegetables containing banned drugs are being sold to consumers. Uluçam warned the public not to eat imported apples and pears.
