Cyprus Women Bi-Communal Coalition – CWBC launches


 

The “Cyprus Women Bi-Communal Coalition – CWBC”, which was newly launched with the support of the Irish Embassy, held a press conference to announce its manifesto and goals.

The press conference began at 10 a.m. at the Ledra Palace Hotel with an opening speech by Keti Clerides. Colin William Stewart, Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus, as well as foreign Chief of Missions and Parliament Members were also present at the conference.

The coalition aims to strengthen the role of women in peacebuilding through the urgent solution to the Cyprus problem, a full, equal, and meaningful participation of women at all levels of negotiation processes.

The essential principles of the coalition manifesto have been represented as, “inclusion, equality, gender perspective, and human rights”.

The CWBC manifesto also emphasized the determination to take action to reach large masses of women in societies from bottom to top and to create strong alliances with civil society in order to implement the manifesto and provide broad-based support.

LONG “WE ARE READY TO CONTRIBUTE”

Making a speech at the meeting, Irish Ambassador to Cyprus Conor Long said that women are aiming to contribute to ending the deadlock and division that has been going on for decades on the island and that they are ready to contribute to the negotiation processes.

Long also pointed out that international contribution and support have had a positive impact on peace processes, and reminded that Ireland had experienced this first-hand.
