Countdown for the European Parliament elections

The countdown to this year’s European Parliament (EP) elections is well underway. There are three Turkish Cypriot candidates running for the election on Sunday 9th of June.

Niyazi Kızılyürek from AKEL, Oz Karahan from Green Party, and Hulusi Kilim from VOLT are among the candidates listed for the election from a total of 7 political parties competing for a seat at the parliament.

There will be 6 members elected to represent Cyprus on the EP, the same number of seats as the last term elected in 2019.

Previous election results provided AKEL with 2 seats including Niyazi Kızılyürek, DISY with 2, DIKO with 1, and EDEK with 1 seat.

EP ELECTIONS ARE BEING HELD ON THE SAME DAY AS THE LOCAL ELECTIONS

EP elections are being held on the same day as the local elections this year. Therefore, a bigger turnout is expected from the public, potentially creating an increase in the polls for the EP candidates.

Parties are required to secure a minimum of 16.66% of votes on the first round to secure a seat at the EP, followed by the 1.8% threshold set for Cyprus on the secondary/tertiary rounds.

Last term 705 MEPs elected for the EP. This year in the 2024 elections, 720 MEPs will be elected. There has been no increase for the number of seats allocated for Cyprus.

The focus of the European Union (EU) for the next 5 year period will be determined by the results of this election.

HOW TO VOTE

Polling stations will be open from 07:00 to 18:00 on 9th June, Sunday.

There will be a lunch break for the polling crew between 12:00 – 13:00.

Voters should cast their vote on either a political party or an independent branch, then if preferred can pick up to 2 member candidates from the selected political party or independent unit.

If the voter checks boxes on candidates assigned to different political parties, their vote will be discarded and regarded as invalid.

Citizens of Cyprus Government can check https://etv.elections.moi.gov.cy/ to see if they have been automatically registered to vote with their ID number.
