“Panic button” application to become an institutionalised way of reporting domestic violence to the Police

The MPs Pavlos Mylonas, Irini Charalambidou, and Alexandra Attalidou filed a law proposal to institutionalise the digital application “Panic Button” for the prevention and treatment of acts of violence against women and domestic abuse.

The “Panic Button,” which is installed on a smartphone and allows victims (mostly female) to safely report incidents of domestic violence that pose a threat to their life or physical integrity, has been reported in Philenews. This allows the police to respond promptly.

Other European states already have such apps running.

This proposed law amends the Prevention and Combating of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence and Related Matters Law.

It was stated “After the last incident of violence, which unfortunately ended in the murder of a young mother, which could have been avoided, we considered it imperative to implement this measure aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence”
