Life becomes more expensive on both sides of the island


 

Cost of living on both sides of Cyprus is getting higher.
Cost of living in the North, goes up 3.27 percent in September. Meanwhile inflation soars to 4.0% in the South.
According to the Consumer Price Index figures released by the Statistics Institute in the North , there was a 63.64 per cent change compared to the same month of the previous year, and an 81.22 per cent change compared to December of the previous year.
HIGHEST INCREASE ON EDUCATION CATEGORY
Among the main expenditure groups, the highest increase compared to the previous month, with a rate of 17.89 per cent, was observed in the education category.
Compared to the previous month, there was an increase in the average price of 87 out of the 518 items covered by the index, while there was a decrease in the average price of 87 items.
RED CABBAGE REACHES RECORD PRICE
The top three items with the highest price increases were red cabbage with a rate of 157.35 per cent, white cabbage with a rate of 93.63 per cent, and the rental fee for a sports pitch with a rate of 87.55 per cent.
The top three items with the highest price decreases were the national lottery with a rate of 40 per cent, okra with a rate of 28.31 per cent, and lemons with a rate of 27.82 per cent.
THE CPI REACHED 117.67 UNITS
Inflation in September 2023 surged to 4.0%, according to the latest data from the Consumer Price Index (CPI) released by CySTAT in the South.
The CPI increased by 1.33 units, reaching 117.67 units, compared to 116.34 units in August 2023 when the inflation rose to 2.6%.
For the period from January to September 2023, the CPI recorded a 4.0% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
INCREASE ON PETROLEUM PRODUCTS
When analysing the economic origin of this inflation, the most substantial positive change, compared to September 2022, was observed in the category of Agricultural goods, with an increase of 15.2%. In contrast, the largest change when compared to the previous month was monitored in Petroleum products, which saw a 5.1% increase.
The category of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages recorded the most significant positive change, with prices rising by 9.7% compared to September 2022. On the flip side, the category of Communication recorded a negative change of -0.6%.
Compared to the previous month, the largest change was noted in the category of Clothing and Footwear, where prices increased by 7.8%.
For the period spanning January to September 2023, compared to the same period in the previous year, the most notable changes were observed in the categories of Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (9.1%), Restaurants and Hotels (6.1%), and Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, and Other Fuels (5.8%).
