May Day celebrated in buffer zone

The unions of two municipalities held a joint event in honor of International Workers’ Solidarity Day. The meeting took place on May 1st in the buffer zone in Nicosia.

The event was attended by non-governmental organizations PEO, DEV-İŞ, KTAMS, KTÖS, KTOEÖS, BES, KOOP-SEN, DAÜ-SEN, members of the World Federation of Trade Unions.

A message of “solidarity and common struggle for peace and social justice” was given at the joint event. A message of solidarity was also passed on to the Palestinian people.

A joint statement about the meeting was made by the president of DEV-İŞ, Koral Aşam, and by the general secretary of PEO, Sotiroulla Charalambous.

A concert was performed by Kulisa Teodoru and Umut Albayrak following the joint statement.

Reading the May 1 statement, DEV-İŞ President Koral Aşam pointed out that today’s high prices and inflation are lowering the living standards of workers and that economic and social inequalities are increasing due to neoliberal policies.

Aşam called for a resolution of the Cyprus problem based on agreed terms, urging the two leaders to make use of the UN envoy and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

Aşam noted that workers can increase their earnings and social gains with a common struggle.
