“Water levels in aquifers declining due to population growth”

Groundwater levels continue to decline in North Cyprus, despite the water received from Türkiye.

“It is crucial to know the importance of our local resources and to be aware of the necessity of Geology and Mining in this context, even if we receive water from Türkiye.” Director of Geology and Mining, Ayşen Albayrak was cited as saying.

Albayrak stated that there were no improvement in water levels or decline in salinity levels, and emphasized that the reason for the groundwater levels to drop and for soil salinity levels to rise are gravity related.

“It was predicted that, within the scope of water supply project from Türkiye, 75 million cubic metres of water was to come from every year, yet the current amount received is 41.3 million cubic metres.” Albayrak said.
