Improved safety measures for the Lady’s Mile beach over the Summer

Until September of this year, there will be more police officers present in and around the Lady’s Mile beach in Limassol, according to officials of the Sovereign Base Area Police.

The well-known hotspot is predicted to draw over 20,000 beachgoers in the summer, so law enforcement will be on hand constantly to make sure the season goes off without trouble.

An Incident Control Point Vehicle (ICPV) will be stationed at Lady’s Mile’s entrance on weekends and public holidays as part of the increased presence. Regular patrols by the SBA Police Marine Unit and the use of drone technology to improve area visibility are sure to improve this.

Speaking ahead of the launch date, Superintendent Dinos Petrou explained the thinking behind the decision to increase police numbers around the seashore.

He said: “Our aim is to prevent similar incidents to last year, where there was a fatal jet-ski accident.

“The ICPV will be used as a sub-station for the SBA Police resources to deploy more effectively in the area. It will also be a focal point for any other resources of our partner agencies, such as the Environmental Department, SBA Administration, the Area Office and the Multi Agency Enforcement Group (MACE).

“Our officers and partner agencies will also be distributing various leaflets to members of the public over the summer period to highlight potential risks, such as road and beach safety, crime prevention and environmental protection.”

Highlighting the importance of collaborating with the Cyprus Police, Superintendent Petrou said: “Cooperation with CyPol and the CyPol Marine Unit will be essential in order to ensure the safety of those using the beach.

“This will be a high-profile operation and will deliver our core responsibilities in a manner that is compatible with our code of ethics and in a fair and proportionate way.
“We want to ensure that everyone enjoys their summer, without the fear of crime and in the safest way possible.”
